Prescriptions
Ordering repeat prescriptions
We ask that you allow sufficient time for the practice to process your prescription request. Please allow 3 to 5 working days for us to have your prescription sent to your nominated pharmacy.
You can order repeat prescriptions:
- using the GP online system: Patient Services
- by calling our Prescription line on 01546 462 003
- bringing a paper form to the surgery (the right hand side of your repeat prescription), Monday to Friday from 8am to 6pm
If you have registered for the Medicines Care and Review Service (MCR) for serial prescriptions with your local pharmacy, you will not need to request repeat prescriptions every 1 or 2 months- your pharmacy will dispense your medication and a new prescription will be arranged from the practice annually.
Collecting your prescription
You can usually collect your prescription from the pharmacy 3 to 5 working days after you have ordered it.
You will need to choose a pharmacy to collect your prescription from. We call this nominating a pharmacy. You can change your nominated pharmacy at any time by contacting the practice.
There are 2 pharmacies in Lochgilphead: Argyll Pharmacy tel: 01546 603217 and Truhealth Pharmacy tel: 01546 602455. Both Pharmacies are located in Argyll Street, Lochgilphead.
We are also able to send prescriptions to any pharmacy in Scotland if you are temporarily away from home- though please call the surgery to discuss this with us.
About Practice Pharmacists
Our practice has access to a team of pharmacists who assist us with many aspects of care and can answer most questions related to medication.
Our pharmacy team are responsible for issuing urgent prescriptions, reviewing repeat prescriptions, answering medication queries and contribute greatly to care for ongoing illnesses.
You may receive calls from our pharmacy team about many aspects of your care.
About Community Pharmacists
Community pharmacists can offer advice and prescription medicines for minor illnesses such as:
- coughs
- colds
- sore throats
- tummy trouble
- aches and pains
This service is called Pharmacy First. You do not need an appointment to use this service.
They can also advise on medicine that you can buy without a prescription.
Most pharmacies have a private consultation room where you can discuss issues with pharmacy staff without being overheard.
Our local pharmacies are Argyll Pharmacy and Truhealth Pharmacy.
Questions about your prescription
If you have questions about your medicine, your local pharmacists can answer these. They can also answer questions on medicines you can buy without a prescription.
The NHS website has information on how your medicine works, how and when to take it, possible side effects and answers to your common questions.
If you would like to speak to someone at the GP surgery about your prescription please call us and ask to speak to our practice pharmacist.
Medication reviews
If you have a repeat prescription, we may ask to speak to you for a regular review. We will be in touch when this is needed but usually this will be annually. We ask that patients call the surgery in their birthday month to organise annual review. This helps us ensure your medications are still correct for you and you are still on the correct dose. Call on 01546462001
What to do with old medicines
Take it to the pharmacy you got it from. Do not put it in your household bin or flush it down the toilet.
To avoid medication waste, please check the contents of your prescription prior to leaving the pharmacy, and hand back any incorrect medications, as once you have left the building the medication can not be reissued and will have to be destroyed.
